Where the water is really coming from
The single most common reason a Sub-Zero pools water on a Woodside kitchen floor is the defrost drain. Built-in refrigerators and freezers run a quiet defrost cycle several times a day; the small amount of melt is meant to trickle down a narrow tube behind the rear wall, into a shallow pan near the compressor, and evaporate. When the tube glazes over with ice or fills with a paste of food residue, the next cycle has nowhere to send its water, so it overflows the trough and runs forward — out the lower-left corner and across the boards. People often mistake this for a plumbing failure, but the fix is clearing the drain and clipping in the tiny resistive heater that keeps the outlet thawed.
Our climate makes that drain marginal more often than people expect. Homes tucked under the redwood canopy off Kings Mountain Road and along the creek draws stay damp through the wet months, and a refrigerator working in a humid cabinet sheds more defrost water with every cycle. A drain that copes fine in a dry interior valley kitchen can keep refreezing here, which is why the recurring puddle is so common on the Peninsula side of the hill.
The water side: filters, fill lines and valves
If your unit makes ice, dispenses water, or feeds a separate ice maker, there is a second family of leaks that has nothing to do with defrost. The filter housing is the usual suspect. A cartridge seated a thread off, an O-ring that rolled during a change, or a hairline crack where the filter twists in will weep a steady drip down the inside of the cabinet and out the toe-kick a day or two after the swap. Further back, the plastic fill line can split at a fitting, and the saddle valve under the kitchen sink — common on older Woodside installs — can seep where it pierces the copper. Condensation that looks like a leak
Not every wet floor is a leak. On integrated and panel-ready columns, a door gasket that has gone hard or taken a set lets warm room air slip into the box. That air dumps its moisture as a film on the glass shelves and the inside back wall, beads along the door, and can drip enough to convince anyone there is a leak. In foggy stretches and through the damp winter, this is a frequent false alarm in open hillside kitchens. We measure cabinet humidity and test gasket contact with a slip of paper before we ever reach for a pump or sealed-system diagnosis — the cure there is a gasket or a hinge adjustment, not a major repair.
What to do right now
- Protect the floor first
Lay an absorbent towel along the toe-kick and a folded one under the front feet. On wide-plank oak or unsealed stone, standing water wicks into seams within hours, so soak it up before you investigate.
- Find where the water actually starts
Dry everything, then watch for ten minutes. Water tracking from the lower-left front usually means the defrost drain; drips at the dispenser or filter point to the water side; a film on the inside back wall is frost melting, not a true leak.
- Pop the lower grille and feel for ice
Remove the kick panel and look at the drain pan and drain tube. A ridge of ice at the drain outlet, or a pan that is bone-dry while the floor is wet, both point to a blocked or frozen defrost drain.
- Check the water connections
If your unit makes ice or dispenses water, inspect the filter housing, the saddle valve under the sink and the poly line for beads of moisture. Do not over-tighten anything; note what you see and leave it.

When it is the drain pan or the deeper system
Occasionally the water is not coming from the drain or the supply at all. A cracked or displaced drain pan, a clogged pan-to-evaporator path, or a frosted evaporator that periodically dumps a slug of melt can all mimic a front leak. These need the unit checked from behind, and on a flush built-in that means a careful, floor-protected pullout — never a default first move.
