Why a freezer warms while the fridge stays cold
This is the symptom that confuses people most, and it is also the most diagnostic. On the classic Sub-Zero built-ins — the BI-36, BI-42 and BI-48 families and their column cousins — the freezer and the fresh-food compartments are not one fridge with a shared cold supply. They are two separate sealed systems, each with its own compressor, evaporator and defrost circuit, sharing one cabinet. So when the freezer drawer goes soft while the salad crisper is still cold, you are not looking at a whole-appliance failure; you are looking at a fault on one of two systems. That single observation rules out a long list of expensive guesses before anyone opens the unit.
The defrost system: the usual culprit
Every Sub-Zero freezer makes a little frost as it runs, and a defrost cycle is supposed to melt it off the evaporator on a schedule. When a defrost heater burns out, or the thermistor or control that triggers the cycle fails, frost stops melting and simply keeps building. Within a week or two it forms a solid blanket over the coil, the air can no longer pass through, and the box climbs even though the compressor is running its heart out. Pull the back panel and you will see it: a wall of white ice where there should be bare fins. The repair is the failed defrost component plus a thorough manual ice-out, and it is nowhere near sealed-system money.
Airflow, the evaporator fan, and the gasket
The other common path is air movement. A small evaporator fan pushes cold air through the freezer; when its motor stalls, or ice locks the blade, the coil may still be cold but the cold never reaches the food. You can sometimes hear it — silence where there should be a soft whir, or a rhythmic clicking as a blade catches frost. Door seals matter too: a freezer gasket that has hardened or taken a set lets humid room air pour in, and through Woodside's damp winters and foggy mornings that moisture lands as still more frost, accelerating the whole problem. We check the fan and the gasket together, because one often drives the other.
Outbuilding and backup freezers run hot here
A lot of Woodside properties keep a second freezer somewhere other than the kitchen — a butler's pantry, a garage bay, a barn workshop or a tack-room nook on the horse parcels off Cañada Road and Mountain Home Road. Those spaces are not climate-controlled, and a dry-summer afternoon can push the surrounding air well past what a kitchen unit ever sees. Add a condenser packed with the fine dust and oak pollen that drifts through open outbuildings, and a perfectly healthy freezer can struggle to hold temperature in the heat of the day yet recover overnight. Before we condemn a part on those units, we clean and verify condenser airflow, confirm the model's ambient rating, and document an actual recovery curve.
Food safety while you wait
- Read both temperatures before you panic
Put a thermometer in the freezer and one in the fresh-food side. A freezer above 10°F with a fridge near 38°F tells a very different story than both compartments warming together.
- Look for a wall of frost
Open the freezer and check the back panel and vents. Heavy frost over the evaporator, or vents iced shut, points to the defrost system or airflow, not low refrigerant.
- Listen for the evaporator fan
With the door switch held, you should hear a soft fan moving cold air. Silence, or a clicking and stalling sound, suggests the fan motor or an ice-jammed blade.
- Triage the food
If the freezer has been above 0°F for hours, move anything that has begun to soften to a working unit or a cooler with ice. Partially thawed food that still has ice crystals can usually be refrozen.
- Note model and call

When it really is the sealed system
Sometimes the freezer side genuinely has a refrigerant or compressor fault, and on a unit twenty years and up that conversation is fair. But it should come last, with proof: airflow confirmed, defrost components tested, the evaporator fan verified, and a frost pattern and pressure picture that actually point to refrigerant.
